No matter what, your answer is the same: be real with God and tell him how you feel. Slow down, be still, be honest with yourself and with the Lord. It is a form of prayer that frightens me. Oh, I can plead or praise, repent, rejoice, in well-formed sentences and mean it all (or try to) but there is a way to do all that and still to keep a barrier in place, not hold his gaze, for fear of what might happen if I did. I can—just—keep this heart of mine intact by quickly passing through all that’s concealed within. To linger long would shatter it. But then at last (you’d say) it could be healed.
